Dojo Graduations

During the summer the Dojo celebrated two graduations. Hans Lie graduated from Dojo Book 2, and Lucine Musaelian graduated from Dojo Book 1.

In order to graduate Hans and Lucine each performed from memory all of the fifteen pieces in the respective books, a big accomplishment!

Saturday Dojo

The dojo met this morning in Inwood. Lucine Musaelian, Janet Hassett, Susan Daily-Rozendaal, Hugh Young, Hans Lie, Marine Musaelian, Sean Daily, and Lisa Dowling attended. We played scales in F, B-flat, and E-flat; repertoire from Dojo Book One; and Orlando Gibbons' variations on Goe From My Window. Hans played excerpts from Book Two in preparation for his upcoming graduation; Janet played the first movement of the Abel sonata in C-major; and Sean accompanied me in the Tombeau de Lully of Marin Marais.

Next Dojo, June 23. More Gibbons!

Toot Finale

On Saturday, June 2, members of the Texas Toot's viola da gamba class performed William Byrd's Fantasy à 6 #2 in the workshop's student concert. It was beautiful, and the teacher was proud.

Toot Day Two

In Tuesday's Dojo class we worked on contact point (it can almost always go closer to the bridge!); dynamic range, using the Leopold Mozart exercise; trill drills; and the Eighth Tune of Tallis.
In other viol classes at the Toot we played John Wilbye's "I love, alas," John Baldwine's Browning; and John Coprario's Fantasy à 6 # 2. Another perfect day.

Fifteen enthusiastic viol players are working with me in Dojo classes and consorts this week at the Texas Toot in Austin, TX. With four class sessions every day we can get a LOT of work/play done!

The class members are Ferne Allan, Sarah Harriman, Dave Martinez, Natalie N. Morgan, Hazel Mosely, Kim Shrier, Nancy Ellis, Cynthia Mahlau, Paul Downs, Stephanie Stuart, Jon Walters, Gerry Priest, Wnedy Brockett, Frank Shirley, Bev Wills, and Victor Eijkhout.
